Challenge
A payment network operated without centralized merchant category code guidance. The MCCs were defined, but not centrally managed and updated.
Because of this, partners across the ecosystem applied MCCs inconsistently, each interpreting codes differently based on their own understanding. As a result, internal teams lacked a unified reference point, leading to conflicting guidance and operational inefficiency. The absence of clear standards created friction at every touchpoint.
The core need: A definitive reference that would establish network-wide consistency and eliminate operational ambiguity.
Solution
We created comprehensive MCC documentation, designed to serve as the authoritative reference for the entire network ecosystem. This comprehensive guide was established based on comparing every single MCC code used within the organization. We also conducted a comprehensive study on MCCs used within the industry and used this to compare it with our client’s documentation, and to update their MCCs.
1. We started by understanding what works across the industry:
• Examined MCC frameworks across industry stakeholders to identify best practices
• Reviewed published ISO standards for merchant categorization
• Identified common approaches and effective guidance structures
2. Then, we built a guide that covered the full scope of the network's needs:
• Every code used across payment networks, fully documented
• Actionable guidance on when and how to apply each code
• Variations and requirements for different geographic markets
• Real-world scenarios demonstrating proper implementation
Results
The MCC Guide transformed merchant categorization from a source of inefficiency into a foundation for consistency. The guide became the vital reference point the ecosystem needed.
• Partner onboarding became smoother. There was much more clarity and consensus about which codes to use.
• Internal teams had definitive answers to categorization questions.
• Training became simpler with a single authorative source.
• Compliance teams had clear standards to reference.
On the surface, it might appear that an MCC Guide addresses mere merchant categorization. But you see that beneath that, it is a complex web and essential guide to transaction routing logic, interchange optimization, compliance frameworks, regional regulatory variations, and merchant experience design.
